We Didn't Expect To Be Tested This Soon

(or to start the New Year with this post)

Many of you have been kind enough to ask how you can provide financial support to Madrina Molly™ as this effort launches, and we are grateful. For now, the best gift you can give is to subscribe (for free) to the newsletter on this platform, Substack. We have made the decision that we will build our mailing list and use Substack’s free features, of which there are many. But when it comes time to monetize our offerings, we will migrate elsewhere.

Why? In short, we always want to walk our talk about living our values. Our goals for Madrina Molly™ include monetization of our content to fund a foundation and, in turn, to have that philanthropic entity contribute to services and policies around caregiving and caregivers. We will share more about that down the line.

But for now, as we teach our cohort to be intentional with their time, money and values, that means choosing where these valuable resources are spent. Currently, Substack is embroiled in a controversy surrounding its decision to allow Nazis to use its platform without content moderation.

“Oh, Sherry,” you may ask, “must everything be political?” Absolutely not, and this isn’t. Politics is about winning. Policy is about values.

It would be easy for us to ignore that and continue to move forward. Unlike the “site-formerly-known-as-Twitter,” there is no algorithm feeding us this subversive content; we would have to seek it out. Still, Substack is not entirely without content moderation rules, and that makes their decision to allow this content suspect.

“Oh, Sherry,” you may ask, “must everything be political?” Absolutely not, and this isn’t. Politics is about winning. Policy is about values. I would argue that everything is about policy. Show me where you spend your money (this goes for both governments and individuals,) and I will tell you what you value.

At Madrina Molly™, we value supporting organizations that do not tolerate Nazism, far-right ideology, or intolerance for the diversity of humankind. To the extent we can be intentional about spending our money around that, we will do so. When we feel that we control where our money goes, we feel wealthy. It’s part of our credo, and we stand by it and live it.

At Madrina Molly™, we also recognize that values are highly individualized; and women of a certain agency value different things. Our ask is that you “vote with your wallet,” as I am fond of saying. And that means knowing where you shop and what brands you buy. Thus, you can make decisions that enable you to feel more in control, even if we shop and eat at different places.

Here you can read a little more about what is going on, courtesy of Ken White, who is quite thorough. As for us, we will now put our heads down and create content we want you to know and return to our self-assigned “swim lane.” When we migrate, it will be automatic, and you will not experience inconvenience.

Thank you, again, for your subscription to our posts and for sharing our launch.

We wish you more joy than you can stand in 2024!
